Twinless: A Bold and Twisty Dark Comedy That Redefines Grief and Friendship

James Sweeney’s Twinless is the gentle of film that doesn’t just entertain—it takes you on a journey through uncharted emotional and narrative territory. Premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, this clever dark comedy balances grief, identity, and the fragile connections we make in the get up of loss.

The story begins as a bromance between two grieving twinless brothers: Roman (Dylan O’Brien, delivering a career-defining double performance) and Dennis (played by Sweeney). Roman, reeling from the sudden loss of his twin Rocky, finds solace in Dennis, whose own twin brother passed years earlier. Their joint grief leads to grocery shopping dates, late-night conversations, and even a highway trip to a Kraken game in Seattle.

But just when you think you have the movie figured out, Sweeney flips the script—quite literally. Twinless transforms into a sharp, psychosexual narrative, drawing comparisons to the works of Almodóvar and De Palma. The film explores complex themes with humor and nuance, blending precise dialogue, expressive cinematography, and unexpected twists to keep you

Sundance Pulls ‘Twinless’ From Digital Platform After Major Online Leaks, Including Dylan O’Brien Sex Scenes

“Twinless,” a comedic drama starring Dylan O’Brien, has been pulled from Sundance’s streaming site after sex scenes and other content from the film leaked online. The leaks came as “Twinless” won the festival’s coveted Audience Award on Friday.

It’s the second movie to be pulled from Sundance’s site this year. “Selena y Los Dinos,” a documentary about Tejano singer Selena, was also scrubbed from the service after the clip “suffered a series of copyright infringements,” meaning it also leaked online. There were reports that fans were putting various musical numbers from “Selena y Los Dinos” on TikTok and Instagram.

“The motion picture ‘Twinless’ was a victim of some copyright infringement on various social media platforms, therefore the festival in partnership with the filmmakers have made the decision to eliminate the film from the Sundance Production Festival online platform. We regret that online ticket holders will no longer be able to

Dylan O’Brien, ‘Twinless’ Director James Sweeney on ‘Helpful’ Intimacy Coordinators and the Influence of the Olsen Twins

[Warning: This story contains mild spoilers for “Twinless,” which premiered on Thursday at Sundance Film Festival.]

Dylan O’Brien reveled in the process of playing dual roles in “Twinless,” a twisted comedic drama about two friends who meet in a support collective for people who lost a twin. The “Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star portrays equal brothers Rocky, who unexpectedly dies, and Roman, who is left to navigate the unbearable grief without his other half.

“The twins were so distinct on the page. I felt such a other connectivity to each of them. That came really naturally,” O’Brien says at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “For me, it’s very physical. Once the process kicks into full gear with costumes, hair and makeup and the things that [director] James [Sweeney] and I discussed in terms of walk, talk and posture, that helps me.”

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O’Brien Does Double Duty in Sly and Stirring Queer Charmer

After his twin brother dies, Roman (Dylan O’Brien), an irascible young man living in Portland, becomes emotionally unmoored. What is life without his other half? So far not great. The funeral for Rocky is an awkward affair. Mourners line up to offer Roman and his mother (Lauren Graham) condolences only to start crying the moment they come confront to face with the living twin. He looks so much like his brother, they speak, it’s weird and a tiny uncanny.

Premiering at Sundance, James Sweeney’s sly dark comedy Twinless might inspire similar sentiments. The film boasts an off-kilter tone — think the absurdity of Problemista meets the wry sensibility of The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed— that shocks before it settles. Like Julio Torres and Joanna Arnow, Sweeney walks a tightrope, shifting between dry humor, gutting devastation and emotional poignancy with varying degrees of accomplishment. But even when Twinless falters, it always steadies itself and succeeds in other ways.
