Thirty years ago, in October 1990, an idea was born that changed the face of overnight clubbing forever!

The 1980s’ London gay-club scene was already thriving, playing disco, alternative electronic and initial house music in venues such as Heaven, the male lover ‘superclub’ in Charing Cross. Then the arrival of sway music and a new drug, ecstasy, in the behind 1980s changed the face of clubbing forever. Trade, the capital’s first legal after-hours dance club, was to accept it to yet another level.

All-night bender
Advertised as ‘the first all-night bender’, Trade was launched in Islington by Irish-born Laurence Malice on 29 October 1990 at Turnmills, 63b Clerkenwell Road, EC1, near Farringdon Station. Laurence’s aim was to create a safe haven where people could be themselves and to help stop the risks gay men faced after clubs closed, such as ‘queer-bashing’ or arrest from cruising. Above all, he wanted it to be a place where clubbers could flee the fear and homophobic backlash that the AIDS crisis brought during the 1980s. Trade also had the extraordinary opening times of 3am

Many cities have a 'gay village' – an area with bars and clubs where LGBT+ people can feel safe to show their identity.

Manchester’s is called Canal Street. It's recognised as one of the UK’s liveliest LGBT+ hubs.

The beginnings of Canal Street

In the 19th Century, the area surrounding Canal Lane was thriving – not with bars and clubs but with the cotton trade. Manchester had get Cottonopolis – at its peak producing 30% of the world's cotton. At the heart of Cottonopolis was the network of canals that kept the cotton trade moving through the city.

Booms are typically followed by bust, and when canals were replaced by other transport methods and the cotton industry stalled, the areas around the canals became deserted. This vacuum created a red light district, attracting sex workers and queer men to the area.

On the corner of Canal Street today stands a pub called the Brand-new Union. It was built in 1865, and in the 1950s became a place for lesbians and gay men to assemble up.

It looks like a normal pub, but when you take a closer look you can watch the windows are filled with clouded glass – anyone on the outside can’t see in. This meant that those

Trade Club Sydney

Sex with a stranger should be steamy, slutty and safe. This premier sex venue offers a safe and confidential environment where you can receive busy with queers and queens through to truckers and tradies

Formerly known as HeadQuarters, Trade is a cruise club (or sex on premises venue) for men to get it on, spicy and safely with other men. If you've never ventured into a sex venue here is how it works; You rock on up and try to hide your nerves, pay a modest fee (usually under $25) for entry and once you are through the doors wander around sizing up fellas who are hopefully sizing you up right back. As a dry-cruising venue, patrons are required to remain clothed until they hop in a cubicle, sling room or booth with their fresh 'buddy', where both parties can then strip down and obtain it on! HeadQuarters offers a number of themed areas such as a sling room, garage room and dark room, so punters have plenty of options to get creative in. Condoms and lube are practically on tap here, encouraging all horny buggers to get busy safely.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
