Kim Kitsuragi And The Beauty of Mundane Queer Narratives
Disco Elysium rules. Whether it's the beautiful art direction, deep dialogue, heavy political themes, or captivating choice-based narrative, you’d be hard-pressed not to fall in care for with it.
One of the most remarkable parts of Disco Elysium to me is also one of its most underappreciated. In the middle of their investigation of Revachol, protagonist Harrier “Harry” Du Bois comes across a smoker on a random balcony, and after a series of random questions, the player (but not Harry) finds out the smoker is homosexual.
It All Starts With A Random Smoker On A Random Balcony
Harry thinks of the smoker’s homosexuality as a “secret underground movement” looking to conspire against the declare. All the while, both Kim Kitsuragi and the smoker himself look at Harry with amusement.
This interaction gives Harry the “Homo-Sexual Underground” thought, one of the most time-consuming thoughts in the entire game with its eight hours of research second. And your reward is nothing other than the realization that obsessing over sexuality is dumb and
God, Kim Kitsuragi. I love this guy. He is so fascinating and multilayered. He is a gay mixed Asian (coded) in a world that has nothing but disdain for him. He became a detective and finally establish some semblance of power, finally became something other than a faggot binoclard who lost his parents in the war. He is endlessly patient and profesional and bluff. He is stoic but not frosty, he is a sore winner and surprisingly childish and really not so above it all. He has a sexy accent. He smokes one cigarette a day, which in his notion is more troublesome than quitting, because he likes the feeling of having control over his nicotine addiction. He feels a strange sense of event for having no connections to Seoul other than his ancestry. He will verbally lacerate those who espouse bigoted views. He will laugh at Harry during his bisexual person awakening. He will give Harry a high five if he successfully shoots down a corpse from a trunk. He is not religious but makes the sign of the cross in the church and prays to build the shot that will save Harry’s life. He is a man downtrodden by politics. Who defined himself as a moralist but now claims to only believe in the RCM. He had a partne

Disco Elysium is a game about wanting to be held tenderly by Kim Kitsuragi.
Okay, it’s not really. Disco Elysium is a game about a lot of things. It’s about the ruin and resilience at war with each other in the depths of the human brain. It’s about a city overlooked, abandoned and operate into the ground as a result of negligence. It’s about a hanged man, long-dead women with glowing lungs, and an alcoholic cop having a famous midlife crisis.
Disco Elysium, the role-playing game published in 2019 by ZA/UM, establishes you as an amnesiac. It’s not clear who you were, especially not at first. You weren’t well liked, or maybe you didn’t favor yourself. Maybe you were liked once. Maybe you burned it all down. If you did, here is your blank slate: after going on a drunken, suicidal rampage and smashing up your hotel room, you acquire no memory of anything, not even your own name. You don’t even remember your control face! Your character icon is an amorphous, abstract idea until you look in the mirror.
All the unknowing leaves the nature wide open to be discovered and formed as you identify the shape of your n
