Throughout his decades-long career, Bob Mackie has designed costumes and gowns for some of the most famous names in entertainment history: Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Carol Burnett, and Elton John, among many others. He joins LGBTQ&A to converse about his longtime (and still ongoing) collaboration with Cher, the infamous Gone With The Wind curtain dress from The Carol Burnett Show, and male lover life in Hollywood in the 1960s and 70s.

Robert Gordon Mackie (born Parade 24, 1939)[1][2] is an American fashion designer and costumer, best known for his dressing of entertainment icons such as Joan Rivers, Cher, RuPaul, Barbara Eden, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner, Carol Burnett and Mitzi Gaynor. He was the costume architect for Carol Burnett on The Carol Burnett Show during its entire 11-year run and designed the costumes for its spinoff, Mama's Family, and for the 1993 television adaptation of Gypsy.
The work of Broadway's gay and lesbian artistic collective went on exhibit in 2007 when the Leslie/Lohman Lgbtq+ Art Foundation Gallery presents "StageStruck: The Magic of Theatre Design." The exhibit was conceived to highlight the achievements of gay and lesbian designers who work in conjunction with fellow homosexual and lesbian playwrights, directors, choreographers and composers. Robert Gordon Mackie was born in Monterey Park California. He is a costume and fashion designer optimal known for his outrageous costumes for Cher [pictured below] cunningly constructed from little more than net, feathers and sequins.
He has won seven Emmys for his costumes for Cher, Carol Burnett and Mitzi Gaynor. He has been nominated for an Academy Award three times.
He has dressed a veritable who's who of fabulous divas old and new - Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Lucille Ball, Bette Midler, Tina Turner, Ann Margret, Liza Minnelli, Elton John, RuPaul, Eva Longoria Parker, Katy Perry, Pink & Barbie have all sparkled in his fabulous and visionary creations.
Mackie also designed the unforgettable reation worn by Cher at the March 1986 Academy Awards [pictured]. Introduced by Jane Fonda with the words, 'Wait'll you see what's gonna come out here,' Cher was appearing as a presenter after what many considered an Oscar snub (Cher was not nominated for her performance in Mask). 'As you can see,' said Cher, 'I did receive my Academy book on how to dress appreciate a serious actress.'
